Cultural Resistance: War on People in Corporate Resistance, Bhubaneswar, Odisha (Orissa)

21st November 2010.

Today, the mineral resources, the earth, the water, the forest of Odisha- the source of livelihood of the common men- are being taken over by the corporate with the naked support of the state. Rather, the state has raised its gun to defend the interest of the corporate against the poor.

So, we witness the blue water of Chilika turning red with the blood of fisher folks; the spill of adivasi blood unto the earth of Kashipur and Kalinganagar for Birals and Tatas; the destruction of Niyamgiri mountain of Dongria Kondh for Vedanta; attacks on the peasants in the plains of Jagatsihgpur for POSCO; threat to the jungle land of adivasis in Keonjher for Arcelor Mittal; diversion of Hirakud dam water to a number of companies leaving the peasants high and dry.

And, when people are trying to defend their only source of livelihood, resisting not to be eaten up by the corporate greed, they are being brutally suppressed, jailed, implicated in false cases, even `encountered and raped. The entire South Odisha, -from Mandrabaju to Narayanpatna- is reeling under state terror. Again, communal riots (like Kandhamal) are being engineered to break the unity of the people.

The state policy to indiscriminately exploit nature to serve the corporate interests and for the lavish living of a handful of rich is pushing all of us into a massive environmental disaster. This policy of the state is being called Operation Green Hunt: drive out people from their mineral-rich forested land of the Central India and hand over that to corporate houses a war against the poorest of the poor.

On the other hand, when people are dying in hundreds of diarrhoea, of malnutrition, of starvation, the state is failing to provide them with basic medical facilities, clean water but sending thousands of heavily armed police personnel. A state claiming to be democratic is trampling upon democratic values and human rights, even jettisoning the Constitution framed by it. Now, we have reached a time when anybody daring to differ with the state is being charged with `sedition, every feeble voice of sanity and truth is being silenced.

In these crucial moments, `Nisan is striving to keep alive the tradition of Bhim Bhoi and Bhagabati Charan Panigrahi, two cultural registers who had wielded their pens for the downtrodden and participated in mass movements actively. Trying to present artistically the muffled voices; trying to lead the cultural resistance against all forms of status quo a few steps ahead.

On 21st November 2010, Nisan is organizing a Convention on Cultural Resistance: War on People in the Corporate Interest at Bhubaneswar with the co-operation of many people’s movement, militant organizations, pro-people Writers Front, intellectuals, journalists, cultural activists and painters. Internationally famous writer, Arundhati Roy, eminent revolutionary poet of Telugu literature, Varavara Rao and senior lawyer of Supreme Court, Prasant Bhusan have given consent to participate as chief speaker and chief guest. A cultural program with recitation of poetry, exhibition of painting will also be organized along with it. In this occasion, young story teller Samir Ranjan will be felicitated with Nisan-2009.

With revolutionary greeting,

Nisan,(Lenin Kumar)
